New to this edition: * Chapter 1 adds a lead-in section that discusses the issue of film as an art-form before launching into talking about the technology and institutions behind filmmaking. * A logical organization that stresses entire films (film form) rather than isolated techniques. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce the idea of film form, and Chapters 4-8 explain individual techniques and how they are used as parts of whole films. * An extensive set of illustrations using actual frames from the film rather than posed publicity photos. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 are particularly densely illustrated. * New “Where to Go from Here” sections at the ends of the chapters help advanced students and film majors to find further readings and DVD supplements, as well as suggesting simple exercises to help in understanding film techniques. * The text draws upon a greater range of films from various periods and countries for our examples than do other textbooks. * One major organizational change has been made. Parts 3 and 4 from the 7/e are switched. The “Types of Films” chapters on genre and on documentary, experimental and animated films now follow the four chapters on film techniques. * The Film Viewer’s Guide, which was published as a separate pamphlet for a few editions, is now being reincorporated into the text as an introduction to the “Sample Analyses” chapter.
