This book encompasses 23 cases of the most clinically important and frequently encountered infectious diseases and the organisms that cause them. The authors present the microorganisms in the context of a patient presenting with a clinical syndrome, thereby integrating basic microbiology principles with relevant pathology, pharmacology and especially clinical features of the infectious disease. Each fully illustrated case study shows the reader how to solve cases in a consistent, systematic fashion through making determinations about differential diagnosis, laboratory tests, mechanisms of pathogenesis, treatment, and infection control. The text includes discussion of unique virulence factors and treatment of the microorganism as well as showing the relationship between patient history and susceptibility. Although each case will have a single pathogen that is described in detail, other organisms in the differential will be listed with a description of how to identify each organism. Key learning points appear as bullets at the end of the discourse along with study questions.
