摘要:
It is increasingly clear that a broader and deeper understandingof the global environment in general, and the global ocean inparticular, can provide essential insights into the health andwell-being of humankind. Climate change may be the mostpublicly debated of these relationships; however, the generalinterconnections between environmental change and humans are evenmore complex and challenging. To acquire the capacity tomanage environmentally induced risks and to ensure access to thesocial benefits offered by natural systems requires a new, moreintegrated view of human development and environmentalchange. Recognition of that need is evolving. Mostnotably the emerging discipline of Ocean and HumanHealth provides an excellent example for improvedassessment, greater understanding and directed action. The Ocean and Human Health: Society and Human WellBeing is an essential contribution to this interdisciplinaryintegration. It will extend the Risks and Remediesthemes to include both the socio-economic challenges of humanhealth risks, and the social benefits of sustainable coastaldevelopment and resource useboth of which areinsufficiently explored in the existing literature. Thesesocio-economic themes are often addressed and assessed in differentways in different countries. The proposed volume is,therefore, designed to include multiple international andinterdisciplinary authors, ensuring a more comprehensive andmultinational perspective. In particular, it will be possibleto compare and contrast North American and European perspectives, while being of value to a broad global audience.Through a series of edited chapters the goal of the book isbroaden the intellectual boundaries of the emerging Ocean and HumanHealth discipline to a point where social consequences, threats, and benefits can be both understood fully and managedeffectively.
